Beginning of School Year Announcements

Welcome back, here are few announcements to start the school year.

  • The first day of school is on September 2nd. We have been preparing all summer and are eager to see everyone again!
  • If you need any assistance with school supplies, please reach out to us at WMS. We want to ensure that every student has everything they need to succeed. 
  • Please complete your student’s contact information on Powerschool as soon as possible. Your student will not be released to anyone who is not on the emergency contact list, so please be sure that it is up to date to avoid any hiccups. 
  • Meal Benefit applications should be going home with beginning of year paperwork. We highly encourage families to complete one. Those eligible for reduced prices will receive free meals. Meal prices for this year are as follows: $3.25 for lunch and $2.00 for breakfast. A link to the online application can be found on the website. 
  • Picture Day will take place on September 24th. Please plan accordingly with your student. 

Miscellaneous:

  1. Lost and Found- Please be sure to check the lost and found for any items that may belong to you. All items are on display in the cafeteria. 
  2. As stated in the student handbook, students who have 3 or more tardies will be receiving a 1 hour detention for each tardy past 3. Students who serve detention can either take the late bus home at 4pm or can be picked up by a parent at 3:45pm.
  3. If you missed the opportunity to purchase a yearbook online, WMS will have a limited quantity available for purchase. 
  4. The WMS PTO is searching for new members! With the transition to high school, many of our amazing PTO parents are “retiring” from WMS. They are hoping to continue all of the amazing work they do in the years to come. Please reach out if you are interested in being a part of this team!

Summer Announcements

  • Team Letters will be sent out mid-August. Please be on the lookout for this important information. 
  • Please be sure to update your student(s) emergency contact and pickup information on powerschool to enable a smooth transition into the new school year. 
  • The first day of school will be 9/2
  • WMS Open House dates/times are as follows:
    • Grade 6- 8/27, 5-6 pm
    • Grades 7 & 8- 8/27, 6-7pm
    • Grade 5- 8/28, 5-6pm
       


Student Opportunities Over Summer

  • Summer school begins on July 7th at WMS. 
  • Theatre Scrapbook will be hosting a summer camp at WMS over the summer daily from 9am-12pm. 
  • Westerly Public Schools is offering free meals to all WPS students. The service will be located at White Rock Sports Complex and held 7/7-8/1, 11:30am-12:30pm. 
  • Westerly Youth and Westerly Teen Surf Camp will be held this summer with weekly sessions beginning 7/7. This program is a partnership between Paddle Surf RI and Westerly Recreation. You can sign up here
  • There will be a WMS Athletic Camp for anyone interested in playing Middle School volleyball. It will take place at the high school from 7/7-7/11
  • WHS is excited to offer the “Jump Start” program to incoming 9th graders on 8/19 and 8/20. This program is designed to ease the transition to high school. 
  • Students are encouraged to participate in the summer reading program! To participate, students must complete two books and a google form for each book. A special event will be held for all who participate!

  5. Jazz Band with Mr. Schleyer (Wednesdays and Fridays)
  6. Earth Optimist Club (hosted by our friends at Westerly Rec)

-Westerly Music Boosters is hosting Westerly’s Got Talent Jr. at WMS on May 8th in the auditorium at 7pm. Come check out what our talented students have prepared!
-RICAS Testing will continue on May 6th and 7th with the math portion. Science testing for grades 5 & 8 will take place on May 13th and 14th.
-Grade 6 will be having a Spring Fling dance on 5/13 from 2:30-4pm. Permission slips are located in the main office.
-The Scholastic Book fair will be back in town for one more time this year on May 13th and 14th!

Spring sports have started at WMS! We welcome you to cheer on our Bulldogs in having a successful spring season!
Unified basketball is off to a great start this season! The game schedule for April is as follows:

  • 4/2/25 Away game at Davisville Middle School at 3:30 PM
  • 4/9/25 Away game at Chariho Middle School at 3:30 PM
  • 4/23/25 Home game at Westerly Middle School at 3:30 PM
  • 4/30/25 Away game at Cole Middle School in East Greenwich at 3:30 PM

The WMS Yearbook needs your pictures! The following are the categories needed most:

  • 8th grade baby pictures
  • All fall/winter sports with the exception of girl’s soccer and wrestling
  • Spring sports! Please feel free to take pictures for submission
  • Any other friendship/extracurricular/ music and arts photos you have

Westerly Music Boosters is hosting Westerly’s Got Talent Jr. at WMS on May 8th in the auditorium. Auditions will be held in the beginning of April (date to follow soon). The late bus will be available. 

WMS Theatre Scrapbook presents Xanadu Jr.! You won’t want to miss it. Performances will be on Friday,  4/26 at 7pm and Saturday,  4/27 at 5pm in the auditorium.
